As the largest HRSA-funded Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education Safety-Net Consortium in the country, we offer accredited, comprehensive and community-focused residency programs throughout Northeast Pennsylvania and across the United States. 

In Northeast Pennsylvania, close to 200 physician learners gain hands-on experience serving a diverse population, including those challenged by the negative effects of disparate socioeconomic determinants of health in our physician-lead, ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Psychiatry residencies, as well as our Cardiovascular Disease, Gastroenterology and Geriatrics fellowships. At all nine of our affiliated Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike (FQLA) sites and school-based health clinics knows as The Wright Center for Community Health in the Greater Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area, we are privileged to provide non-discriminatory, high-quality care to more than 25,000 patients and 75,000 annual visits with ongoing clinical expansions in both urban and rural settings. 

In four unique regions across the country, Wright Center residents serve communities in the nation’s only multi-state consortium Family Medicine residency. National Family Medicine Residency (NFMR) residents live and work in Washington, DC, New Richmond, Ohio, Tucson, Arizona, or Auburn, Washington, engaging in Federally Qualified Health Center care delivery and inpatient and specialty rotations and electives using one curriculum while sharing the benefits of geographically diverse, cross-system learning to expand their skill sets and care delivery frameworks. 

Training in all Wright Center for GME clinical learning environments, in Pennsylvania and across the country, includes fully integrated and interprofessional service-based education that focuses on socioeconomic determinants of health, community oriented care and Lifestyle Medicine practices.

Internal Medicine

Our Internal Medicine Residency program is The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education’s longest running and largest training program, welcoming our first class of six residents in 1976 and now training more than 100. A three-year Internal Medicine Residency accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the program is designed to provide rigorous, broad-based clinical training with an emphasis on community medicine in and transitional care. IM residents train in The Wright Center for Community Health’s primary care practices along with multiple community-based training sites, including rotations in the Wilkes-Barre Veterans Administration Medical Center, where they have the privilege to serve our nation’s veterans and their families.

We offer a pair of accredited, comprehensive and community-focused family medicine residency programs. Our Regional Family Medicine Residency is located in Northeast Pennsylvania. Our National Family Medicine Residency offers four training locations across the nation. Both of these training programs immerse residents in high-performing, certified Patient-Centered Medical Homes, Community Health Centers, Federally Qualified Health Centers and Look-Alikes as well as community-based hospitals.

Psychiatry

In response to the shortage of psychiatrists in Northeast Pennsylvania and the United States, The Wright Center welcomed our first class of Psychiatry Residents in July 2017. This residency is progressive in its integration of behavioral health services within primary care environments and promotion of preventive screenings, timely interventions and a team-based approach to care, especially for those patients who may not initially seek help on their own. Residents train in regional public health-based settings, including specialty practices, behavioral health clinics, local hospitals and safety-net health centers where they partner with Primary Care and Addiction Medicine teams.

Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship

Cardiovascular disease fellows train in community-based settings where they are immersed in a variety of organizational cultures, electronic medical record systems and varying team dynamics.

Over the course of their three years in the fellowship, fellows train one-on-one with globally and nationally recognized, board-certified cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons. Under our distinguished faculty’s guidance, our fellows hone the knowledge and skills needed to provide state-of-the-art cardiac care, all while advancing the discipline through their own research projects and practice.

Gastroenterology Fellowship

The goals of the Gastroenterology fellowship are to enhance the care of patients in Northeast Pennsylvania facing gastrointestinal disorders, as well as to strengthen the local workforce dedicated to this specialty. Fellows gain experience in both inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology and hepatology experience, including mastery of procedural skills.  Gastroenterology fellows are immersed in the community through active engagement in The Wright Center for Community Health practices, providing treatment to patients with hepatitis C.

The sizable population of our country’s older residents continues to grow as baby boomers hit senior citizen status. We celebrated the Class of 2020 on June 19 with a virtual commencement recognizing the accomplishments of 60 graduating physician learners. Eight members of the Class of 2020 chose to stay in Northeast Pennsylvania to continue practicing medicine.
